Canon Abilities: Vampire stuff: supernatural strength, heightened senses, dark vision, shape shifting into a bat and dog, hypnosis, the ability to create other vampires, wall and ceiling crawling, hard to kill outside of beheading or staking through the heart. Weaknesses include the sun (nerfed from deadly to uncomfortable for the sake of interacting with the game at large like the other in-game vampires) lucidity being directly tied to bloodlust, shrill noises and strong smells, small dropped objects, a dislike of mirrors (he has no reflection or shadow), and garlic.

• Dead- Until he became a vampire, Maurice would simply associate dead with 'that thing my grandparents are' because he was really small when they passed away. It was some distant concept he didn't spend a lot of time thinking about, save when he gave his condolences to people he knew who had lost someone. Now that HE'S dead, Maurice sees it in a whole new light. The body he's grown to rely on to work and enjoy life with is now foreign to him. It makes him dangerous to everyone around him, it denies him things like feeling satisfied after a normal meal or the simple luxury of having a reflection, and it's always cold. He has to live by all these new rules that make him an alien to everyone he's ever known. Being dead is being utterly alone and invisible.


• Friendly - Friendly is something Maurice always strives to be, whether it's talking to customers at work or strangers on the street. He does this for two reasons--because his Momma beat manners into him and because he desperately wants people to be nice back to him. Maurice is a very lonely person and yearns for connection and familiarity, but feels like there's this huge wall in front of him--the wall being his own awkward personality. He remembers his time as a high school bully and how easy it was to be cruel. He thinks that if he can be friendly enough, people will see his efforts and at least be friendly to his face, even if they don't mean it.


• Sin - Maurice was brought up in a Baptist church, so he is well acquainted with sin. The concept has been successfully used to cow him into being a meek and selfless person his whole life. He very much does not want to go to Hell. Still, no matter how much it scares him, Maurice just can't keep from sinning. He drinks every drop he can get, he doesn't go to church, sometimes he steals gum in the check-out line, and then there's the whole vampire thing. Since becoming undead, Maurice has become faced with the reality that he must commit violence against his fellow man in order to save the general population from even greater harm. If he doesn't drink human blood on the regular, he becomes feral and unpredictable. He's on the fence about whether his bloodlust is his personal failing or not. He certainly didn't ask to be a vampire, but it was pretty much his own fault that he got turned into one. He's been a vampire for a few months now and he's starting to think that since vampires weren't in the bible, maybe it might not all be true.


• Glass - Glass is another thing Maurice thinks about more now that he's dead. Before, he often talked to his reflection as a way to work out problems and self soothe--something that started way back in middle school when he was in theater club. As a vampire, Maurice does not cast a shadow or have a reflection. At first, he didn't think about it much since he had so much more on his plate, but as time wore on and parts of his vampirism became normalized and routine, the lack of a reflection really started to get to him. He has episodes of de-personalization now due to the added stress of keeping on top of his bloodlust and keeping away from a vampire hunter in his town.


• Fur - Originally, Maurice's main associations with fur were his family's dog, the allergy causing fur from his mom's cats, and the leathers, skins, and mounts in his dad's garage hideaway. He and his father and uncle would often go duck hunting together when he was younger, so he learned a little about processing animals. His dad often let him keep deer tails and duck feet to treat and turn into little charms and keyrings and stuff. After becoming a vampire, Maurice learned how to shapeshift into both a bat and a dog. While the bat requires more practice, Maurice has really settled in to his double identity as a street dog. He feels a different kind of invisible than the way being dead makes him feel invisible. It's a freeing feeling when people look at him and think of an animal people generally like rather than a "loser". Even after getting hit by a car in his dog form, Maurice is not deterred even a little bit from continuing to masquerade as a shaggy hound whenever he's feeling blue.


• Flower - To Maurice, flowers are a nice thing to look at and sometimes smell or give as gifts, but they can also be used to send messages. Maurice is a lover of Shakespeare, and while he was first studying him in school he found the flower language used in his plays very interesting. Shakespeare is what got Maurice interested in drama club when he was younger. Unfortunately, he never really got the chance to give anyone secret messages via flowers besides maybe his mom on her birthday or Mother's Day. He secretly wishes somebody would give him flowers, but he isn't sure what he'd do if he actually received some.


• Cow - Currently, Maurice's opinion on cows are mixed. Growing up, his Dad's family had cattle. For the past two years up until the events of the book, Maurice spent a good amount of time at his landlord's house helping with the cattle. Feeding, repairing fences, helping load and unload them, things like that, in return for a lower rent on the trailer at the edge of his landlord's property. So, they were a source of income in hid mind. Newly turned and thirsting for blood, Maurice tries his hand at biting some of those same cattle. They nearly stomp him into the dirt and he quickly gains a new respect for them. He's always eaten cattle in a removed, more abstract way. Trying to eat one in a more direct, animalistic way has fueled his de-personalization of both himself and other people. There's a small part of his mind (the part that drives him to drink blood) that keeps telling him that it's all just animals eating animals anyway.
